7 Things Every New Real Estate Agent Should Do
So you just found out that you passed your state licensing exam and you want to get the ball rolling in your new career. Where do you start? What steps should you take?
Read on to see what new agents should do.
P.S. numbers 4, 5, and 6 are for ALL AGENTS!
1 – Pick the right broker. If you choose a broker based solely on promises of a large compensation, you are likely to never see that money. Why? Because in order to succeed in the real estate world you need the tools, leadership, knowledge, and training necessary to be good at what you do.
You can’t make money if you don’t know what you are doing and if you have no idea how to market yourself.
2 – Less talking, more listening. So you found the broker who will guide you and give you the tools you need to succeed. Great. Now listen up and take the broker’s advice – as well as the other seasoned agents in your office. You can learn a lot from people who have been in the game for a long time.
3 – Spread the word. Take the time to write short letters by hand and mail them out to friends and family letting them know that you are now a licensed real estate agent. Think about it. When’s the last time you received anything in the mail that wasn’t a bill? Whenever that was, I’m sure you appreciated it more and it stuck in your mind. This is a great way to get referrals and start up a network of potential clients.
4 – Become a local expert. Take the time to study and learn about the areas that you plan to service. Drive around, get a feel for the neighborhoods, and learn about the perks of living in each area, such as; the schools, fun annual events, community safety, parks, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and so on. When you can sell the community, you will have an easier time selling a home.
5 – Never stop learning. This concept is true for both your work life and personal life. While working, learn from what is and what is not helping your business. Learn new social media skills to improve your marketing and reach. Download and implement new apps to enhance your marketing, Constantly stay up-to-date on the housing market and projected trends. The majority of homebuyers are becoming more and more tech-savvy, they expect you to be on the same page.
6 – Build an online audience. You should have a professional online presence that is cohesively and coherently branded. This includes a website, Facebook business page, YouTube Channel, Google Places, and Yelp account. Use these to build your audience and reputation. Invite friends and family to like your pages and follow you to get started.
7 – Be realistic and patient. You are new at this. You can’t expect to be the top real estate agent right away. However, if you take the above advice there is a good chance that you won’t become one of the more than 70% of agents who fail in their first year.
